William Edward Jeralds, called Bill, was born in Tennessee on 16 April 1883, the son of Jackson Jeralds and his wife, born a McCann, both Tennesseans. He married Stella Lee Miller, a year younger. In 1910 they were living in the Ninth Civil District of Polk County, Tennessee, in the hills along the Georgia line, with their first child, Hattie, aged two. A young man named Joseph Basket boarded with them.

More children followed: Jack about 1911, Maude about 1912, Mildred about 1915, Willie Lee about 1919 and Edward about 1921. By the spring of 1921 the family had moved across the mountains to Monroe, in Union County, North Carolina. There, on 31 March 1921, William was killed in an accident: the doctor who saw him that day, R. L. Payne of Monroe, wrote the cause of death as "electrocuted, accident". He was thirty seven, eleven months and fifteen days old, and he left six children, the youngest ten months old. Stella, who gave the particulars as Mrs. W. E. Jearlds, had his body taken back to Tennessee, and the Monroe undertakers E. P. Dillon and Son sent him to Englewood for burial on 3 April.

In 1930 Stella was a widow at Englewood, in McMinn County, raising the five youngest.

Stella outlived him by forty eight years and never remarried. She was buried with him in Cochran Cemetery in McMinn County, under one stone with their nicknames, Bill and Lee, carved beside their names and the words "Together Forever" between them.
