William Givens Spurlock
William Givens Spurlock was born on 3 July 1853 in Warren County, Tennessee, on the edge of the Cumberland Plateau around McMinnville. Cemetery records name his mother as Mary Elizabeth Ferrell Spurlock (1833 to 1912). His brothers and sisters included Martha S. (later Goff), Elizabeth (later Worley), Frances Lincoln "Fannie" (later Brown) and John Bird Spurlock.
He married a Tennessee woman named Nancy, about two years younger than he was. In June 1880 the census taker found them in District 12 of Warren County: William, 26, Nancy, 24, and their children Bird, 6, Thomas, 4, and Mary F., 1. All five had been born in Tennessee.
Later the family moved to Falls County, Texas, on the Brazos River south of Waco. His son Tom married Annie Mae Gibson there in the 1890s, and his daughter Mary Frances, called Florence, married a Gibson. William Givens Spurlock died at Durango in Falls County on 29 June 1915, five days before his 62nd birthday. He was buried in Carolina Cemetery. When Tom died in 1951, his death certificate gave his father's name as Will Spurlock.
