William Gurley
William Gurley was born at Inverness, Scotland, about 1665. The Gurley family history of 1897 says he "came with the family of Rev. Solomon Stoddard from England to Northampton, Mass., in 1679, at the age of 14 years; in whose family he was brought up and educated." Solomon Stoddard was the minister of Northampton.
In 1684 he married Hester Ingersoll, a daughter of John Ingersoll and Abigail Bascom. Her father died that September.
On 1 May 1687 he was drowned in the Connecticut River, at the age of twenty two. The genealogy adds: "He is reputed to have been truly pious and a sincere follower of Jesus Christ." His wife was pregnant. Their only child, Samuel, was born on 17 May.
Hester married Benoni Jones of Northampton in January 1689. She was carried to Canada in 1704 and died there. Samuel grew up, married Experience Rust and settled at Mansfield, Connecticut, where the Gurley name took root.
