William Harvey Kelley
William Harvey Kelley, known as Harvey, was born on 8 August 1845, in Pike County, Kentucky, a son of William Kelly. He served in the Civil War as a private in Company C of the 39th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, a Union regiment raised in the Big Sandy valley of eastern Kentucky in 1862 and later mounted.
On 28 September 1867 he married Sallie Mullins. They lived first in Russell County, Virginia, where their daughter Causby Jane was born in 1871, and then on the land around Clintwood and Freeling that became Dickenson County in 1880. Thirteen children were born to them. Among them were Caroline Amanda, Causby Jane, Louisa, Lilburn, Christopher Columbus, Mary, Walter and Alice.
His old father William lived out his life in Harvey's house near Freeling and died there in January 1914, thought to be near one hundred. About 1893 Harvey joined the Old Regular Baptist Church at Little Zion, and he kept his seat there as long as he could get to it.
Sallie died on 1 May 1927, after nearly sixty years of marriage. Harvey died on 20 January 1933, aged eighty-seven. Six days later his son-in-law Cas Johnson died at Jenkins after a fall from a truck. Harvey was buried in the Kelley graveyard near Clintwood beside Sallie. That June his son Lilburn Kelley applied to the War Department for the free marble headstone owed to a Union veteran.
