Causby Jane Kelley was born on 3 March 1871 in Russell County, Virginia, a daughter of Harvey Kelley and Sallie Mullins. Her father was a Union veteran of the 39th Kentucky Infantry, and her parents had married in September 1867. They raised a large family on the land that became Dickenson County in 1880, and thirteen children were born to them.
About 1888, at seventeen, she married Cas Johnson. Her first son, George, was born on 27 November 1889. In 1910 she was 38, living near Clintwood, and the census records that she had borne ten children and that all ten were alive. Nine of them were at home that year, from Harrison, 18, down to Ada, a baby of nineteen months. An eleventh child, Alpha Louise, followed.
In old age she and Cas lived at Jenkins, Kentucky. January 1933 took both her father and her husband. Harvey Kelley died on 20 January, aged eighty-seven. Six days later Cas died at Jenkins from a fall from a truck. The next year her son Cass, a night patrolman at Russell, Kentucky, died too.
Causby Johnson died at her home at Burdine, near Jenkins, in January 1945, after a short illness, aged seventy-three. Her Kentucky death record gives 17 January. Her death record names her parents as Harve Kelley and Sallie Mullins. She was buried beside Cas in the Vanover Cemetery at Burdine.
