William Hendrix Murph, known as Will, was born in Union County, Arkansas, on 12 December 1855. Memorials compiled by relatives give his parents as William H. Murph, an Alabama man born about 1828 who did not come home from the Civil War, and Elizabeth B. Murph.

He married first, in Ouachita County in 1882, Sarah Katherine Murphy, called Sallie, and they had sons Henry Olin, born in 1884, and Will John, called Jack, born in 1888. In 1892, again in Ouachita County, he married Emily Ailene Blann, called Alene or Lena, who was seventeen years younger.

With Alene he had a son, Blann Stark, in 1892, and then a long run of daughters: Versa Clark in 1894, Eva Mae in 1896, Jimmie Neal on 23 June 1898, Lois Pearl in 1901, Louise in 1903, Mary Mattaline in 1908, Gail in 1910 and Minnette Morene in 1915. Eva Mae died at 13 in 1909, and his son Henry Olin at 28 in 1912.

The family moved from Ouachita County to El Dorado in about 1903. Will died at El Dorado on 18 April 1926, aged 70, and was buried in the Bethel Cemetery. Alene was laid beside him seven years later, under a shared stone that reads "MURPH" with their names joined by a carved chain of rings, and below them "YOUR LOVE WILL LIGHT OUR PATHWAY".
