William Higgins
William Higgins was born in Illinois in March 1845, by the census of 1900; the census of 1920 says 1846, and it gives both of his parents as Ohio-born. By about 1887 he had married Eliza Emily Pickett, a Kentucky woman fifteen years his junior. The couple's first children, William T. in December 1887 and Alice in May 1891, were born in Arkansas, and by July 1894, when their daughter Georgia was born, the family had come up into Mississippi County, Missouri.
The census of June 1900 found them farming in James Bayou Township, at the settlement the enumerator wrote down as Three States village, where the bootheel points at Kentucky and Tennessee. The census of 1910 holds the same James Bayou household: William, Emily, and all five children still at home. By January 1920 he was at St. James Township, seventy-four and still farming, with Emily, his grown daughter Georgia, fourteen-year-old Goldia, and a child of two, Virginia C., whose place in the family is not established; at Emily's age she can hardly have been a daughter.
That July, Goldia died at fifteen of a kidney disease. A William Higgins, the father or the son who shared his name, gave the doctor her particulars, and the girl was carried to Brownsville, Kentucky for burial. William himself died between that summer and February 1923, when his wife's own certificate recorded her a widow. No death record for him is known in Missouri or Kentucky, and his grave is not known; the family's use of Brownsville ground points to Kentucky.
