William Hille was born in Virginia about 1836 and was brought to Cincinnati as a small boy. The 1850 census of Ward 10 has him at fourteen in the household of his widowed mother Caroline, with his sister Mary and his brother Friedrich, all three of them born in Virginia.
He married Martha Holmes in Hamilton County on 14 July 1857, and their daughter Virginia Ella was born at Cincinnati in October 1860. The 1870 census has the household back in Ward 10, under the spelling Hiller: William thirty three, born West Virginia, his wife thirty one born in Ohio, Virginia aged nine, William aged six and Wallace aged four. West Virginia on an 1870 sheet means Virginia before the state was divided.
He died in the seventies. The 1880 census has Martha in Cincinnati at forty one, widowed, keeping house, with the two boys. So he was gone between June 1870 and June 1880, in his thirties or early forties.
His daughter's 1937 death certificate calls him Robert and gets his birthplace right. The 1857 marriage return, the 1870 census and his son Wallace's 1941 death certificate all say William, and the first two of those were written while he was standing there.
