William Kerrich
William Kerrich of Saxtead, in Suffolk, was born about 1480. He was probably the son of William Kerrich of Saxtead, who died in 1504 and left "my son William Kerych a tenement in Saxsted, with lands, he finding his mother for life."
He was taxed at Saxtead in the subsidies of 1522/3 and 1545/6. In 1547/8 he held copyhold land of the manor of Framlingham. Copyhold land was held of the lord of a manor, and the tenant's title was a copy of the entry in the manor court's roll. His lands lay in Saxtead, Framlingham, Earl Soham, Monk Soham and Abbotte. His wife's name is not known.
He made his will on 10 September 1551. "To be buried in Saxsted churchyard. To Robert, my son, my tenement where I dwell and my lands in Saxsted, Framlingham, Erls Soham, Monks Soham, and Abbotte. To my son William Kerrich lands in Earls and Monks Soham. My son Robert Kerrich is to pay to my daughter Annes 40s. and to my daughter Christian £3. 6s. 8d." His son William was to pay £3 6s 8d to "John Byrd, my belchild", or to John's sisters Margaret, Brydit and Elizabeth Byrd if he died. A belchild was a grandchild. If Annes died, her share went to her children.
He remembered his godchildren: "To John Kyrryche and Thomas Kerrych, the sons of Robert Kerrych, and to Annis, daughter of William Kerrich, my godchildren, 5s." Every other godchild had 12 pence. To Robert went "a brass pot belonging to the house" and to William "the brass pot that I bought." He left something to his servant Johane Cowper, to Walter Tanner and his children, and to his wife's goddaughter, Olive Chapman.
The poor of Earl Soham had £3 4s 8d. He also gave to the poor of Kettleborough, Brampton, Bedfield, Monk Soham, Worlingworth, Tannington and Dennington, "to the mending of Saxsted roads", and "to all the poor of Saxsted at my burial." Every grandchild had 3s 8d, except the five already provided for, John, Thomas and Annes Kerrich, Robert Chapman and John Byrde. His cattle and household stuff went to his two sons and two daughters. His executors were "Robert Kerriche of Bedfield, the elder, and William Kyrryche of Westen, my two sons." The supervisor was Thomas Button the elder of Saxtead. The witnesses were Rycharde Button of Saxtead, John Page the elder and John Curtis the elder of Earl Soham, Thomas Chapman of Saxtead, William Turner, and John Hillyes, priest of Earl Soham.
He died before 9 May 1552, when the will was proved at Ipswich.
