William Mullins, whom his family called Billy, was born in Wyoming County, West Virginia. On 25 July 1872 he took out a licence in Clay County to marry Sarah Jane Peyton, and the county's register of marriages records the wedding the same day. He was 21 and she was 22. He was born in Wyoming County and she in Raleigh County, and both were living in Clay County. David Frame performed the ceremony.
His age in that register puts his birth about 1851. His headstone at Richwood gives 1835, and the two cannot both be right.
Their son Noah was born on 7 February 1876, in Greenbrier County by the death certificate of Noah Mullens. In 1880 the census found William Mullens, about 30, in Braxton County, next to Clay, with his wife Sarah J. and three children, Noah, Arezula and Melvina J. Susie was born on 25 December 1882 in Clay County, and her own death certificate names Billy Mullens as her father. That certificate names her mother as Hannah Cutlip, a different name from his wife's.
Sarah Jane died at Richwood on 19 July 1911 and was buried in Richwood Cemetery, her stone marked as the wife of William. William followed her in 1919 and lies beside her. His headstone, carved with a spray of flowers along the top, reads "WILLIAM MULLENS, 1835 - 1919, Gone, but not forgotten". Noah, a paper mill worker who was buried from the Riverside Baptist Church in 1958, lies in the same cemetery, and so do Susie and her daughter Sarah Ann Hammons.
A studio portrait of William survives in the family: an old man with a long white beard spread over a dark coat, his hair combed back, looking straight at the camera.
