Susie Martha Mullins was born on Christmas Day, 25 December 1882, in Clay County, West Virginia. She was a daughter of William Mullins, called Billy, who had married Sarah Jane Peyton in Clay County on 25 July 1872. Her brother Noah was born in 1876. The family later moved to Richwood in Nicholas County, where her father and Sarah Jane are buried.

The records do not agree on her mother. Her own death certificate, filled in by her son Roscoe Lewis in 1963, names her mother as Hannah Cutlip. Her father's wife from 1872 until 1911 was Sarah Jane Peyton, and Susie was born in the county where they married, ten years into that marriage. The death record of her brother Noah also names his mother as a Sarah. No record yet found names Susie's mother except her death certificate.

On 25 April 1901 she married Henry Lewis in Greenbrier County. She was 18 and he was 22. Their first child, Sarah Ann, had been born on 1 March 1900, and nine more followed over the next twenty-seven years. In 1920 the family was in Greenbrier County: Henry and Susan Lewis with Dessie B., Lee Opal, James, Kenna, May and Roscoe at home, and Sarah already married to Silas Hammons. Kennie had been born at Trout and Mae Fannie at Falling Spring, both Greenbrier County places.

About 1925 they moved into Pocahontas County, to the mouth of Tea Creek on the Williams River, where Henry worked as a woodsman. Robert, the last child, was born there in 1928, and in 1930 they were at Edray with James, May, Robert, Berlin, Edna, Kinnie and Roscoe. Henry died there on 28 April 1931 and was buried at Tea Creek. Susie was left with children from three to twenty-one still at home. Her eldest daughter, Sarah Ann Hammons, died in 1948.

In her last years Susie lived at Fenwick in Nicholas County, near her son Roscoe. She died at 55 Green Street in Richwood at a quarter to five in the afternoon on 30 December 1963, aged 81, after a stroke. She was buried in Richwood on New Year's Day, 1964, near her daughter Sarah and her father.
