William Nesbitt
William Nesbitt was a gentleman of Drumalee in County Cavan. He was a justice of the peace by 1707. In 1708 he was a Major in Saunderson's Dragoons, a mounted regiment known, as regiments then were, by its colonel's name. In 1709 he was High Sheriff, the crown's officer in a county for a year, who saw to juries, writs and elections.
He made his will on 9 September 1743, and it was proved in the Prerogative Court on 28 April 1744. The Prerogative Court was the Archbishop of Armagh's court, which proved the wills of people with property in more than one diocese.
He had one son, William, and four daughters. One daughter married Richard Ellis. Frances married Mathew Young of Lahard. Jane is named without a husband, and Abigail married Alexander Seton. Frances's daughter Elizabeth married the Rev. William Brooke of Granard in 1755.
All of this rests on H. B. Swanzy's notes on the County Cavan militia and army lists, printed in Notes and Queries in 1924 and 1925. His wife's name and his own birth are not known.
