William R. P. Thurman
William R. P. Thurman was born in 1834 and died in 1862, by a printed compilation of Henry County, Georgia families. In 1855 he married Narcissis Elizabeth Bryant, who was about eighteen. They had four children in five years: Sarah Elizabeth in 1856, Mary Elizabeth Ann in 1857, Charles Robert on 16 March 1859 and James William on 15 March 1861.
He died the next year, at about twenty eight. A Henry County man of that age dying in 1862 was very likely a Confederate death, but nothing found says so, and no grave is known. His widow married John S. Hughes in 1866 and lived until 1916.
His parents are not known. In October 1850 a boy entered as Wm J., sixteen, lived in the house of James L. Thurmond in the Panthersville District of DeKalb County. James was a mechanic of forty, born in South Carolina, with land worth two thousand dollars. Panthersville is the south DeKalb country of Flat Shoals and Rex, where both of William's sons later lived, and the boy is his age to the year. But the middle initial reads J, not R. P., so the boy may be somebody else. A few pages on in the same district was Richard Thurman, a farmer of sixty three, also born in South Carolina.
His name survived on one state form. When Charles Robert Thurman died at Ellenwood in Clayton County on 7 December 1928, Georgia had been recording the parents of the dead for a year, and the clerk entered his father as William Thurman and his mother as Elizabeth Bryant. Somebody in the room still knew both names, sixty six years after William died.
He is not the man of the same name who died at Atlanta in March 1862. That man was born in 1817 and left brickyard lots in the city.
