William Reade
William Reade was born in England in 1587. A family history of 1861 says he was "supposed to be the son of Thomas and Mary of Brocket Hall," and calls him the oldest of the Puritan emigrants of the name.
In July 1635 he sailed from London in the ship Defence, Capt. Edward Fostick master. He was forty eight. With him were his wife Mabel Kendall, born in 1605, and three children: George, born 1629, Ralph, 1630, and a daughter born in 1633 who appears as Justice and grew up as Abigail. They reached Boston on 6 October 1635.
He settled at Dorchester and was made a freeman on 4 March 1638, which admitted him to vote in the affairs of the Massachusetts Bay colony. In August 1639 he sold his Dorchester property to Thomas Clark and moved to Scituate, in Plymouth Colony. He was constable of Scituate in 1644. That year a son, Israel, was born, and he sent his wife on horseback to Dorchester with the baby to be baptized, since his church membership was there.
His brother Esdras had a grant of land from the town of Boston at Muddy River, now Brookline. Esdras sold it to William, and he lived on it until 1648. Then he bought a farm at Woburn from Nicholas Davis of Charlestown. The land lay on the old road from Salem to Concord, not far from Kendall's mill, and its cellar and well could still be seen in 1861.
His children born in America were Bethia, who married John Johnson, son of Edward Johnson, author of Wonder-Working Providence; Israel; Sarah, who married Samuel Walker in 1662; and Rebecca, who married Joseph Winn. His daughter Abigail married Francis Wyman of Woburn in 1650.
He went back to England and died at Newcastle upon Tyne in 1656. His will, made there, left his wife £60, provided for "my three children that are married in Newengland," and listed debts owed to him on Tyneside. Administration was granted at London on 31 October 1656, under the seal of Oliver Cromwell, to "Maybel Reade, widow." The will was recorded in the Middlesex County probate court in Massachusetts on 16 December 1661.
