William Richard Teague
William Richard Teague, called Will, was born in Arkansas in 1886. On 20 January 1909 the clerk of Crawford County issued a license for him to marry Miss Oma Fields. Both of them lived at Mountainburg, a small town in the hills of northern Crawford County. He gave his age as 22 and hers as 16. W. R. Peters, a justice of the peace, married them three days later, on 23 January 1909.
On 4 May 1910 the census found the couple in Mountain Township of Crawford County. Will was 24 and a farmer, working a fruit farm on his own account. Oma was 18. They had been married one year and had one child, Minnie Lee, who was five months old. Their neighbors on the same page were farm families named Johnston, Peters, Dollard and Straw, nearly all of them born in Arkansas.
Will later moved west to Oklahoma, as Oma and Minnie did. A cemetery memorial for him names three more children with Oma: Hazel, born in 1917, Dearl in 1919 and Billie Lee in 1924. The same memorial gives his parents as Jasper Newton "Nute" Teague and Ruth Adeline Graham. Oma married again in 1940.
Will left Oma in 1931. When she sued him for divorce in Noble County, Oklahoma, in April 1935, he signed a written waiver of summons and did not contest the case. On 27 May 1935 the district court found that he had abandoned and wholly deserted her for more than a year. It dissolved the marriage, ordered him to pay her fifteen dollars as permanent alimony within thirty days, and restored her maiden name of Oma Fields.
Will died in 1962. He is buried in Park Grove Cemetery at Broken Arrow in Tulsa County, Oklahoma. His upright granite stone, WILLIAM R., 1886, 1962, stands on a base lettered TEAGUE, beside a matching stone for Myrtle M. Teague, 1896, 1988, a later wife. A vase stands between the two.
