William Savell
William Savell was baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Saffron Walden, in Essex, on 28 February 1563/4. The clerk wrote "Willm the son of George Sabell", spelling the surname as he heard it.
He was a joiner, a woodworker who made furniture, panelling and doors with fitted joints. On 29 June 1592 he married Margaret Parker at Saffron Walden. They had ten children baptised at St Mary's between 1593 and 1614. Two daughters named Elizabeth died, one as an infant in 1596 and the other in 1618. Their daughter Mary married Edmond Hull in 1618.
On 25 March 1623 the feoffees of the Saffron Walden almshouse lands leased to "William Savell of Walden, joiner, and wife Margaret" a messuage in Freshwell Street for twenty years. The feoffees were the trustees who held the land for the almshouse. A messuage was a house with its outbuildings and yard.
His daughter Ann married Samuel Bass at St Mary's on 25 April 1625. In 1633 she and her husband went to New England, to Roxbury and then Braintree. His son William, baptised in 1604/5, went to Braintree too and died there in 1669.
William Savell was buried at Saffron Walden in February 1638/9. The register reads "William Savell the third day".
