William Whitehill was born in Ryegate on 25 March 1817, the fourth child of John Whitehill, called Big Jock, and Anna Welch. His mother died when he was nine.

On 30 December 1838 he married Anna McLam, the daughter of John McLam. She had been born in Scotland in April 1817. They lived in Topsham and then in the far north of Groton.

They had ten children. Mary Ann was born in 1839, Margaret in 1842 and Lydia Maria in 1843. Albert P. followed in 1846, Victoria A. in 1848 and Josephine E. in 1850. Sarah V. was born in March 1852 and married Harvey Orr in 1876. Nancy E. was born in 1855 and died in 1872 at seventeen. William Alexander came in 1857 and Kate in 1862.

William died at Groton on 13 September 1884, aged 67. Anna lived until 18 February 1901. They are buried in the Groton-Peacham Cemetery, plot B3, under a granite stone carved WHITEHILL, with "William 1817 1884" and "Anna M. 1817 1901".
