Sarah Violet Whitehill
Sarah Violet Whitehill was born in March 1852 in Groton, Caledonia County, Vermont. She was the seventh of ten children of William Whitehill and Anna McLam. Her father farmed in Topsham and in the far north of Groton. Her mother had been born in Scotland.
The Whitehills came from Inchinnan, in Renfrewshire. In 1798 her great-grandfather James Whitehill and his brother Abraham bought six hundred acres in the northwest corner of Ryegate, Vermont, and came over with their families. The purchase was sworn before the Lord Provost of Glasgow on 12 March 1798. Her grandfather John Whitehill was twelve that year.
In December 1876 Sarah married Robert Harvey Orr, called Harvey, who was fourteen years older. Their first child, Clarence Harvey, died in October 1880 aged two. Five more followed: William James, Albert Faris, Grace Lillian, Charles Harvey and Leslie Harold. Two of the sons, William and Charles, married two Crane sisters from Barnet.
Harvey died at Groton in 1911. Sarah died at Peacham on 25 August 1924, aged 72. She is buried with him in the Walter Harvey Cemetery in Ryegate. Her name is cut on the same granite monument as his.
