Yost Harbaugh
Yost Harbaugh, who wrote his name Herbach, was born in the Palatinate around 1700. A record kept at the York County Historical Society says he was born at Kaiserslautern. He married there, and his first three sons were born before the family sailed: George in 1726, Ludwig in 1727 and Jacob in 1730. The name of their mother is lost. Family memory put the crossing in 1736. The Moravian record of his son George says 1738. No ship list carrying him has been found.
His first deed in America is a warrant of 1739, written to "Yoost Harbogh," for a hundred acres in Maxatawny Township, then in Philadelphia County and later in Berks, about halfway between Reading and Allentown. John was born in 1735, Henry about 1740 and Yost on 11 October 1741. About 1743 he moved across the Susquehanna to Kreutz Creek in York County, and he helped found the Reformed church there, which is still there. His son Henry, never married, died in 1779.
His second wife was Mary Elizabeth, who had been married twice before, first to Lorentz Lease and then to a Coppenhoffer. With her he had Leonard in 1749, Mary Elizabeth on Good Friday 1753, Anna Margaret, and Anna Catharine in 1759.
He made his will on 30 March 1762 as "Yost Herbach of Helm township York county," farmer, "being very Sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory," and signed it with his mark. He died within days, about 3 April 1762, and was buried in Hellam Township.
His widow did not keep what the will gave her. She left the homestead and lived afterward in York, where in old age she was so poor that she sold garden seeds and vegetables to get by. A grandson remembered her living in York to a great age, and she died in 1795.
