Zar Benedict Jr.
Born March 29, 1923 in Georgetown, Madison County, New York, the son of Zar Benedict and Nina Niles. He carried a name the family had handed down since Czar Benedict was born in Danbury, Connecticut in 1769. He went to Cornell University, and on October 14, 1947 he married Mary Virginia Moran in her hometown of East Bloomfield.
By 1950 the couple had settled at Wallkill, near Middletown in Orange County, and Middletown stayed home for fifty-three years. He made his working life in farm credit. He was assistant secretary-treasurer of the Farmers Production Credit Association of Middletown by 1952, its secretary-treasurer from 1953 to 1958, and its manager by 1960. The association lent to farmers across four counties. Later he sold farms, as farm-sales manager and then vice president of sales at M. Barmann and Sons, a Middletown realty firm. He was a deacon of Webb Horton Memorial Presbyterian Church and secretary of the Middletown Lions Club.
He and Mary Virginia raised five children: Jeril, Elaine, Candace, Rebecca and Karen. Mary Virginia died in May 2002. Zar spent his last year in Texas and died on December 20, 2003, at eighty, at the home of his daughter in Houston. He was brought home to Hillside Cemetery in Middletown and buried beside her.
