Zenora Worthington was born in Laurens County, South Carolina, about 1838. Her father was James Worthington. Nothing is known of her mother: when Zenora died, her family could not give the mother's name or birthplace.

She married John Moore, a farmer of Laurens County, when she was very young. Her daughter Mary was born in July 1854, when Zenora was about sixteen.

On 8 June 1860 she was 22 and living in Laurens County with John, 37, and their daughters Mary, 7, L., 4, and Ella, six months. The census taker wrote her first name only as an initial.

After John Moore's death she married Mattison Elmore, a farmer of the Waterloo and Cold Point country of Laurens County. He was about sixteen years older than she was and had been married before, to Smantha Knight. In 1910 Senora Elmore, 76, was living at Waterloo with her husband, M. E. Elmore, 86. Mattison Elmore died at Cold Point on 22 October 1913.

As a widow Zenora moved into the town of Laurens, where she lived her last six years. In January 1920 she was 82 and living there with her daughter Ella and Ella's husband, Ludy F. Nelson, and their children. She died at Laurens on 28 June 1920. No doctor had attended her, and the cause was given as old age. Ludy Nelson gave the details for her death certificate. He did not know her birth date, put her age at about 85, and gave her occupation as domestic. C. E. Kennedy and Son buried her the next day at Mount Pleasant, in the cemetery of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Her daughter Mary died ten years later, and Mary's death certificate named her mother as Zenora Elmore.
