Abigail Church
Abigail Church was born on 22 June 1647, a daughter of Richard Church, a carpenter, and his wife Elizabeth Warren. Her father had lived at Plymouth from 1633 to 1649, and the family moved on to Eastham, Charlestown and, by 1653, Hingham. Her mother was a daughter of Richard Warren, one of the men who came in the Mayflower in 1620.
She was one of a large family. Her brothers and sisters included Elizabeth, who married Caleb Hobart and died young; Joseph, who settled at Little Compton; Caleb and Nathaniel; and Benjamin, born in 1640. Benjamin Church became the best known soldier of King Philip's War. He commanded the party by which King Philip was killed in 1676. Another brother, Charles, was killed at Hingham in October 1659 when his cart overturned, when Abigail was twelve.
On 19 December 1666, at Hingham, she married Samuel Thaxter, a cordwainer, the son of Dea. Thomas Thaxter. She bore him seven children in ten years. Her first daughter, Abigail, died a month after birth. Sarah, born on 16 November 1668, lived. A second Abigail died at four months. David, born in 1672, lived to be eighty eight. Mary, John and Samuel were born in 1674, 1675 and 1677, and all three died as infants.
Abigail died on 25 December 1677, aged thirty. Her youngest, Samuel, was eight months old and died the next autumn. Her husband married again the following June.
