Frona Kathryn Boyd
Frona Kathryn Boyd was born in Tennessee on 11 December 1883, by the date typed on her death certificate; her gravestone agrees on the year, and so do the 1920 and 1930 censuses within one. The 1900 census, taken when she was a girl in her father's household in Civil District 1 of Wayne County, wrote December 1886 instead. She was a daughter of Eli Thomas Boyd, a Union veteran farming the hill country near Clifton, and his wife Adline.
On 13 November 1904 she married R. T. Marshall in Wayne County. The first children were born on that ground, Fayette at Clifton in 1905 and Artie on 2 October 1912, and by 1920 the family farmed in Civil District 1 of Hardin County. In the mid 1920s they joined the stream of upland Tennessee farmers moving onto the drained cotton land of the Missouri bootheel, and settled at Wyatt in Mississippi County; when she died, her certificate counted her time there at 35 years.
In her last winter she fell at home and broke her left hip. Pneumonia set in, and she died at Wyatt on 2 March 1961, thirty-six hours after it took hold. Robert, then 89, gave the particulars for her certificate himself: her father's name, Eli Thomas Boyd, and for her mother's maiden name the word Unknown. She was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery at Charleston on 4 March. The gravestone cut for her says 1962, a year late, and every date on the certificate stands against it.
