Albert Hercules
Albert Hercules was born in St. Louis on July 28, 1843, son of Caspar Hercules, born in 1800 at Warstein in Westphalia, and Theresia Hoppe, both of Germany. A birth in St. Louis in 1843 places the family among the city's earliest German immigrants, arrived before the great wave of 1848. The 1860 census shows Albert at sixteen in his father's household in the second ward.
By about 1864 he had married Josephine Urban, a Bohemian immigrant his own age, and their children came steadily for nearly twenty years: Mary, John, Albert, Frank, Josephine, Edward, Rosa, and finally Agnes in 1882. He clerked in a store, and later spent years as a clerk in the office of a Justice of the Peace, retiring about 1908.
His household was rarely just his own family. In 1870 his aged father Caspar lived with them; in 1880 it was Josephine's parents, Frank and Annie Urban, seventy and sixty-eight, written into the schedule as father-in-law and mother-in-law, at home. Josephine died before 1910, and the widowed Albert lived on Texas Avenue with his unmarried children Frank and Josephine. He died there March 24, 1918, of chronic bronchitis, at seventy-four, and was buried at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery on the 27th. His granddaughter Alberta, named for him, was born four days after his burial.
