Agnes A. Hercules
Agnes A. Hercules was born in St. Louis on May 25, 1882, the youngest known child of Albert Hercules, a clerk born in the city in 1843 to German immigrants, and Josephine Urban, born in Bohemia about 1844. She was the last of at least eight children, born when her mother was around thirty-eight and her eldest sister was already eighteen.
On January 9, 1907 she married Conrad J. Hemker, a postal carrier and, by his later record, a veteran of the war with Spain. They raised five children on the south side of St. Louis: Agnes, Conrad, Alberta, Marie and Helen Rose. The censuses of 1920, 1930 and 1940 hold the household together in the city.
Conrad died in 1956. Agnes lived on as a widow at 4426 Minnesota Avenue, the address of her daughter Alberta's family, and died January 13, 1964, pronounced dead at St. Anthony's Hospital, of generalized arteriosclerosis, at eighty-one. Alberta signed the certificate as informant. Four days later Agnes was buried beside Conrad at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
