Theresia Hoppe
Theresia Hoppe was born at Warstein, in the Sauerland country of Westphalia, on October 11, 1803, and baptized the same day at the parish church of St. Pankratius: Anna Maria Theresia Antonetta, legitimate daughter of Jois Hoppe and Elisabetha Mullen, with Elisabetha Schumacher standing as godmother. Six days after her twenty-third birthday, on October 17, 1826, she married Johann Caspar Wilhelm Hercules in the same church.
Four children were baptized to them at Warstein: Johannes Ludwig Conrad in 1827, the twins Anton Joseph and Franz Jacob in 1830, and Maria Anna Francisca in 1832. She buried the fourteen-month-old Franz Jacob in the summer of 1831. After the 1832 baptism the family leaves the Warstein registers, and its next certain record is American: her son Albert was born at St. Louis in July 1843.
In America she becomes nearly invisible. She does not appear beside Caspar in the census of 1860, which suggests she died in St. Louis between 1843 and 1860, in the decades before Missouri or the city kept usable death records. What survives of her in American paper is a few words on her son's 1918 death certificate, Theresa Hoffe, born Germany, an old clerk's honest reach for Hoppe.
