Noah Hoyt
Noah Hoyt was born on 20 January 1788 at Castleton, in Rutland County, Vermont. His father, also Noah, was a Stamford, Connecticut, farmer who had moved the family north to Castleton, where he died in 1811; his mother was Sarah Moulton, who outlived her husband by forty-six years and died in 1857 at ninety or more. One brother, Moore, took a medical degree at Middlebury College in 1821 and died at Parkersburg, Virginia, in 1860. Another, Deacon Calvin, went back to farm at Stamford.
On 20 October 1816 Noah married Hannah Wood, the daughter of David Wood of Greenwich, Connecticut. They farmed at Castleton and had at least four children: Delia, born in 1818, Sarah in 1820, and twin sons, Albert and Rollin, born on 29 July 1824. When David W. Hoyt published his genealogy of the family in 1871, Noah was still farming at Castleton, and his son Albert was farming there too.
The family behind him was old Connecticut stock. His grandfather Nehemiah lived at Stamford and married Ruth Peck of Greenwich in 1742. Nehemiah's father Samuel, a smith, was born in 1678 and died at Stamford in 1738. Samuel's father Joshua, born by 1641, was chosen the town drummer of Stamford in 1667 at twenty shillings a year. And Joshua's father was Simon Hoyt, one of the handful of men who first settled Charlestown, Massachusetts, in 1629, the year before the Winthrop fleet arrived.
