Alice Bell Carpenter was born on 24 April 1896 in Vermont, and the birth return of her son gives her birthplace as Bennington. She was one of the eleven children of John Draper Carpenter, a Civil War veteran of the 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery, and his second wife, Carrie Rosabelle Harvey. Her father was fifty-four when she was born, and he had nine children from his first marriage as well. The family lived on Branch Street extension in Bennington.

Alice was twenty when her father died at the Vermont Soldiers' Home in November 1916 and twenty-two when her mother died of tuberculosis at home two years later. Her mother's obituary lists her among the eleven children still in Bennington.

She married George Quackenbush, a Bennington stonemason ten years older than she was, whose parents also lived on Branch Street. On 23 July 1917 she gave birth to their son Stanley Shirley Quackenbush, her second child. She was 21.

Stanley was her second child. George Quackenbush also had a son Richard, who was seven in August 1922 and so was born about 1915, before Stanley. Richard was very probably Alice's first child, though his mother is not named in the newspaper report of his death. On 30 August 1922 Richard was killed by an accidental rifle shot while hunting birds with an eleven-year-old neighbor boy near the family's home beyond the Branch Street bridge in Bennington.

Alice later married Douglas G. Laker, born in 1900. Their daughters were June Rose, born in 1926, and Barbara R., born in 1928. Douglas died in 1961. Alice Bell Laker died at Bennington on 6 February 1974, aged 77, and was buried in the Maple Grove Old Cemetery.
