Stanley Shirley Quackenbush was born at Bennington, Vermont, on 23 July 1917. His birth return, filed with the Bennington town clerk, names his father as George Quackenbush, a stonemason aged 31, and his mother as Alice Carpenter, aged 21. Both parents were Bennington born, and Alice lived in Bennington when he was born. He was her second child. The physician, Lucretius H. Ross, M.D., gave the information.

His gravestone gives a different year, 23 July 1914, and so does his memorial. The day and month agree on both. The town record was written at the time, so 1917 is the stronger date, but the family carved 1914.

Quackenbush is an old Dutch name from the Hudson Valley of New York, and Bennington sits just over the New York line. Stanley grew up there as the son of a man who worked in stone. At some point he came south to Aiken County, South Carolina, the cotton mill country across the Savannah River from Augusta, Georgia.

Stanley had an older brother, Richard. On 30 August 1922, when Stanley was five, Richard was killed at seven by an accidental rifle shot while hunting birds with an older boy near the family's home beyond the Branch Street bridge in Bennington.

On 8 April 1949 he married Eunice L. Smith, the daughter of a Bath mill family. The date is carved on their double headstone: "Married April 8, 1949." Nine months later, on 25 January 1950, their daughter Shirley Louise was born at Augusta. Six more children are named in Eunice's obituary: Janet, Rhetta, Adelbert M., known as Bo, Randy, Mark and Stanley Jr. In 1965 the family lived at Langley, one of the Horse Creek Valley mill villages, and they stayed in that corner of Aiken County for the rest of his life.

Stanley Quackenbush Sr. died on 15 December 1986. Posey Funeral Home of Langley buried him in Langley Cemetery. Eunice lived thirty more years and was laid beside him in 2017 under the same stone.
