Carrie Rosabelle Harvey
Carrie Rosabelle Harvey was born at Searsburg, Vermont, on 28 July 1874, the daughter of John Vinson Harvey and Elizabeth Theresa Kenyon. Searsburg is a small mountain town east of Bennington, and her parents later lived at Readsboro, the next town south. She married John Draper Carpenter, a Civil War veteran born in 1842, who was thirty-two years older and already the father of nine children. Their own first child, Ora Ada, was born in 1893, when Carrie was about eighteen.
She bore eleven children over nearly twenty years: Ora, Henry, Alice, Nora, Alila, Tressie, Gertrude, Dorothy, and Gilbert, James and Myrtle. The last, Dorothy, was born in 1912. The family lived on Branch Street extension in Bennington.
John died at the Vermont Soldiers' Home in November 1916, leaving Carrie with young children at home. Two years later, on Saturday, 16 November 1918, she died at home of tuberculosis, aged 44. Her obituary ran on the front page of the Bennington Evening Banner. She left eleven children, nine of them in Bennington, Alila at Vergennes and Ora at Grand Isle. Her parents were still living at Readsboro. She also left two brothers, two sisters and nine stepchildren. She was buried beside John in the Bennington Village Cemetery, under a stone inscribed "Wife of John D. Carpenter."
