Andrew Charles Stackle Jr.
Andrew Charles Stackle was born April 11, 1917 at Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, the third of the four children of Andrew Joseph Stackle, an iron worker, and Mary Helen Burgert. The family had been in Ste. Genevieve County for three generations. When Andrew was a boy of about twelve they left it, joining the movement of the county's German families up to St. Louis, and the 1930 census finds them in the city with all three sons still at home.
He applied for a Social Security number in November 1936, at nineteen, signing as Andrew Charles Stackle, Jr. On November 11, 1939 he married Alberta H. Hemker in St. Louis; the license had been taken out on October 27. The 1940 census catches the newlyweds as lodgers in the Ward 11 household of Josephine Frost, a widow born in Austria, and in October 1940, when the first peacetime draft registration came, he named Alberta as the person who would always know his address.
By 1950 he was a mail carrier for the Post Office, the same work his wife's father had done in the same city, and the census of April 10 that year lists a household of eight: Andrew, Alberta, and six children aged one to nine. The seventh and last, Helen, arrived the following January. The family home in later years was 4426 Minnesota Avenue on the south side. Andrew died April 21, 1991, ten days past his seventy-fourth birthday, and is buried at Resurrection Cemetery, Affton, in the lot where Alberta joined him twenty years later.
