Anna Gutbrod was born at Kusterdingen, in Württemberg, on 27 May 1845, by her obituary, and was baptised there the next day. Her parents were Johann Martin Gutbrodt and Anna Ebinger, who had married in the village in 1834. Their marriage entry names her grandparents too: Johann Jakob Gutbrodt and Anna Maria on her father's side, Johann Jakob Ebinger and Anna on her mother's. She was confirmed in the village church. In 1866, at twenty-one, she emigrated to America and made her home at Lincoln, in Logan County, Illinois.

A compiled family tree gives her brothers and sisters as Johann Martin, born in 1839, Magdalena, born in 1842, Johann George, born in 1848, and Jacob, born in 1850. A younger sister, Anna Maria, born about 1852, was buried at Kusterdingen on 3 September 1869. Her mother died in 1874, by the tree, and her father was buried in the village on 25 February 1875.

On 10 January 1867 she married Jacob Zimmerman, a widower eight years older with two small children, Gottlieb and Christina, whose mother had died in 1863. The Logan County clerk wrote her name Annie Gudbrot. Her obituary prints it Gutbrov and her Nebraska memorial Goodbrod. All of them are the Württemberg surname Gutbrod, heard by clerks who did not speak German. She raised the two stepchildren and had eleven children of her own, six daughters and five sons. Her daughter Regena, born in 1868, married John Ruppert of Nokomis in 1889.

The censuses find her at twenty-five at Elkhart in 1870 and at thirty-five, with nine children in the house, in Chester Township in 1880. In 1892 the family moved to a farm near Utica in York County, Nebraska, and in 1908 to the town of Seward. She was a member of the Evangelical Church. She and Jacob kept their golden wedding in 1916.

She died at home in Seward on 7 May 1919, aged seventy-three years, eleven months and ten days. Her funeral was held at the Evangelical Friedens church, and she was buried in the North cemetery at Seward. Her obituary names her eleven children, her two stepchildren, twenty-nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. R. Grauer of Marysville, Kansas.

Kusterdingen is also where her daughter's mother-in-law came from. Anna Marie Grauer, John Ruppert's mother, was baptised there in October 1844, less than eight months before Anna. Her brother Jacob farmed at Marysville, Kansas, where Anna's own sister married a Grauer. Which sister that was is not known; Magdalena, born in 1842, is the likeliest. So both of John and Regena Ruppert's mothers were born in the same village near Tübingen.
