Johann Martin Gutbrodt lived at Kusterdingen, a village a few miles east of Tübingen in the kingdom of Württemberg. He was baptised there on 16 September 1807, the son of Jakob Gutbrodt and his wife Anna Maria. His father was Johann Jakob Gutbrodt, and his mother was very probably the Anna Maria Wandel whom Johann Jakob had married in 1798. He was the fourth of their eight children, and two of his sisters, Barbara and Charlotte, married men of the Grauer family. The village church was Evangelical, the Lutheran state church of Württemberg, and its books recorded every baptism, marriage and burial.

On 13 August 1834 he married Anna Ebinger at Kusterdingen. The marriage entry names the parents on both sides: his were Johann Jakob Gutbrodt and Anna Maria, and hers were Johann Jakob Ebinger and Anna. Ten weeks later, on 31 October 1834, his father was buried at Kusterdingen.

A compiled family tree gives the couple a son Johann Martin, 1839-1906, a daughter Magdalena, born in 1842, and sons Johann George, 1848-1912, and Jacob, 1850-1937. The church books add two daughters. Anna was baptised on 28 May 1845, the daughter of Johann Martin Gutbrod and Anna, and another line of the same entry names the mother "Ebingerin", the feminine form of Ebinger that Württemberg clerks gave a woman. Anna Maria, born about 1852, was buried at Kusterdingen on 3 September 1869, a daughter of Johann Martin Guttbrodt and Anna.

Anna, born in 1845, emigrated to Illinois in 1866. She married the widower Jacob Zimmerman in Logan County in 1867 and died at Seward, Nebraska, in 1919. Her obituary names one surviving sister, Mrs. R. Grauer of Marysville, Kansas. Magdalena, born in 1842, is the likeliest of the daughters to be her, but no record shows it.

His wife was buried at Kusterdingen on 10 March 1874. He was buried there on 25 February 1875. The burial entry gives his birth as about 1808 and names him as the son of Johann Jakob Gutbrodt and Anna Maria and the husband of Anna Ebinger.
