Arnett Glasscock was born on 12 September 1831 in Monongalia County and died on 21 November 1902 at Arnettsville. He is buried in Smith Cemetery there.
His name is his mother's. She was Polly Arnett, married to Charles Glasscock at Monongalia County in 1814, and Arnettsville is named for her family. He was one of eight children and the only one given her surname as a Christian name.
The 1850 census has him at eighteen in his widowed mother's house. He married Elizabeth Coogle at Marion County on 6 May 1858, when he was twenty six and she twenty one, and farmed the Grant District, where the 1880 census finds him at forty eight with Elisabeth at forty four and their son Jonathan C. at twenty one.
He fought for the Union. The compiled service records of West Virginia volunteers have him in the Sixth Infantry, aged thirty two, in 1864 and 1865, and he is on the 1890 census of Union veterans and widows for Grant District, back on the same ground he left.
He was born in Virginia and died in West Virginia without moving, because the county voted itself out from under him when he was thirty.
