Benjamin Franklin Hinton
Benjamin Franklin Hinton was born on 26 July 1847 in north Louisiana, in the Woodville settlement southwest of present-day Ruston. He was a son of Hugh Hinton, a North Carolinian who had settled there about 1842, and of Hugh's second wife, Winiford Huey, called Winnie. When the census taker came in September 1850, Benjamin was 3, the seventh of ten children in the house. In 1850 Hugh gave the land for Wesley Chapel church and its cemetery, and his own stone there lists his children with their birth dates. "Benjamin Franklin, July 26, 1847" is the ninth name on it.
Benjamin married Sarah Elizabeth Wright, a widow nine years older than he was. Her first husband, Charles Mason Huey, had left her with two children, Charles Mason Huey and a daughter called Dinka. Benjamin and Sarah had six more: James Huey Hinton, called Jimmie, Winnie, who married Hope Fallin, Ola, who married Jim Kinman, Leslie, Julia, born in December 1880, and Sallie, who married an Alexander. Julia married Wesley Broadwell Lyles and stayed in the Wesley Chapel community.
Benjamin spent his life within a few miles of the church his father founded. He died in Lincoln Parish on 26 September 1922, aged 75, and was buried at Wesley Chapel. Sarah lived another twelve years, and they share a gray granite stone carved HINTON.
