Winiford Huey, called Winnie, was born on 13 April 1820 in Ouachita Parish, in the country around Monroe, Louisiana. Her memorial names her parents as James Huey and Priscilla Franklin, of a Huey family that had come out of Chester County, South Carolina.

She became the second wife of Hugh Hinton, a North Carolina farmer who had settled in the Woodville area, southwest of present-day Ruston, about 1842. His first wife, Effie McLeod, died in 1844 and was buried at home. She left five children: Mary, Minerva, Budd, Roderick Tobe and Alexander. Winnie raised them along with her own. A marriage in Ouachita Parish is dated 25 January 1848. Her first two sons, James Huey in May 1846 and Benjamin Franklin in July 1847, were born before that date, and the records do not explain the gap.

The census taker reached the household on 9 September 1850. Hugh Hinton was 40, a farmer born in North Carolina, with land worth 1,400 dollars. Winney was 30 and born in Louisiana. Ten children were at home, from Mary, 13, down to a daughter, Sarah, one month old. That same year Hugh and Winnie gave the land for a church and burying ground. The family stone puts it in one line: "Realizing the need for a cemetery and church Hugh and Winnie gave this land in 1850." The church became Wesley Chapel.

Winnie bore eleven children in eighteen years: James Huey, 1846; Benjamin Franklin, 1847; Robert J., 1848; Sarah E., 1850; Jessee J., 1851; Priscilla, 1854; Winney, 1855; Laura Gray, 1857; Virgil Irene, 1860; Maude, 1862; and Hugh Jr., 1864. Her son Benjamin Franklin married Sarah Elizabeth Wright, the young widow of Winnie's own brother Charles Mason Huey, who died at Vicksburg in 1863.

Hugh died in January 1882. Winnie lived five more years and died on 20 July 1887, aged 67. She was buried at Wesley Chapel, on the land she had helped give. Her name is on the right-hand panel of the Hinton family stone there, "Winiford Huey, April 13, 1820, July 20, 1887," with Effie McLeod on the left and Hugh in the center.
