Luella Piatt was born on 26 July 1864 in Tiffin Township, Adams County, Ohio. Her parents were Benjamin Piatt Jr. (1814 to 1899) and Elmira Bayless Piatt (1825 to 1902). Her siblings included Martha, Polly Ann, Jackson Pierce "Jack" and Hannah. In 1880 she was fifteen and still at home in Tiffin Township, a daughter in the household of her father Benjamin Piatt, then 64, with her sisters Belle and Betsy and her brother Benjamin Dickey.

In 1883 she married John Marion Francis, a widower about 25 years her senior. A tintype of the two of them survives. He sits bearded in a dark coat, and she sits beside him in a dark dress with a light bow at the collar. Their children were Anna Belle (1886), Benedict Benjamin (1888), the twins David Evans and Carey Hall (both 1891), Izella (1896) and Jesse Stanley (1900).

John Marion Francis died at West Union in August 1921 of cancer of the left eye socket, and Luella gave the details for his death certificate. In 1923 she married James Cummings Shultz, who died in 1937. She died on 22 July 1948 at Iroquois, Iroquois County, Illinois, four days before her 84th birthday. She is buried in Liberty Cemetery there, under a flat stone reading LUELLA SHULTZ 1864 1948.
