Caroline Seymour was born about March 1797; her headstone gives her age at death as seventy six years and eight months. She married Joseph Gaylord, born at Norfolk, Connecticut, on 19 July 1792, in December 1817. The Connecticut marriage records have them as "Joseph Gaylord (2nd)" and "Caroline Seymour" in four entries giving 15 or 16 December 1817, and one giving December 1819. Their daughter Mary C. was born at Norfolk on 15 August 1818, which agrees with 1817. Their son Edwin was born at Colebrook about 1820.

In May 1825 her husband and her brother Alva Seymour of Colebrook bought a farm of two hundred acres at Turin in Lewis County, New York, in the Black River valley, and the two families moved there. Edwin was five. Mary C. married Harlow Shepard of Turin in 1836 and raised eleven children.

In 1855 the New York state census found Joseph Gaylord, sixty five, and Caroline Gaylord, sixty, in the household of their son Edwin at Turin. Joseph died of typhoid fever at Greig on 1 June 1871. Caroline died on 15 November 1873 and is buried in the Turin cemetery. Her stone reads "CAROLINE GAYLORD DIED Nov. 15 1873 Æ 76 yrs 8 mo."

Her parents were Bildad Seymour of Colebrook, a carpenter and farmer, and Jemima Hurd, who married in 1794. Franklin Hough's History of Lewis County, written in 1883, names Bildad as the father of Alva Seymour, and says Alva bought the Turin farm "with his brother-in-law, Joseph Gaylord." Alva's own wife was Sophronia Cowles of Norfolk, so the tie between the two men ran through Caroline. Bildad was born on 13 January 1766. His other daughters included Chloe, Abigail, who married a Hart, and Susan, who married a Shepard.

Her parents went to the Black River country before she did. In 1822 or 1823 Bildad and Jemima were dismissed by letter from the Colebrook church to "the Black River Country, N.Y." Her father died at Turin on 10 February 1828, aged sixty two, three years after the Gaylords arrived. Her mother died in 1851.
