Percy Edmond Walton
Percy Edmond Walton was born on 1 February 1902 at Brunswick, Maine, the third child of Almon Lester Walton and Susan Clara Mitchell, who had married at Livermore Falls in April 1896. His brother Harold Almon and his sister Doris Pearl were born before him, Doris at East Livermore in 1899, and the family was at East Livermore in 1900. In January 1920 the census found the four of them at Livermore, Androscoggin County, with Percy, seventeen, still at home. His father died at South Gardiner in November 1921, when Percy was nineteen, and his mother lived on at Wilton until 1962.
He did not marry young. In April 1940 he was thirty-eight, single, and a hired man in the household of Harry Mitchell, fifty-one, at China Village in the town of China, Kennebec County, where he had been living since at least 1935. On 18 September 1942, at forty, he enlisted in the Army at Portland; what he did in the war is not recorded.
He was a man of Wilton, Franklin County, when he married on 23 March 1946 at Fayette. The bride was Phoebe C. Mitchell of Fayette, twenty years old, a 1943 graduate of Livermore Falls High School. He was forty-four. She was also his first cousin: his mother Susan and her father James Marion Mitchell were children of Charles H. Mitchell, the Civil War soldier buried at Moose Hill, and Lucy J. Lakin. Their son Carrol James had been born at Brockton, Massachusetts, a year earlier, on 3 March 1945.
On 27 April 1950 the census found Percy E. Walton, forty-eight, and his wife Phoebe C. at Wilton, Franklin County. Their son was not with them: two weeks later the enumerator at Fayette wrote the five-year-old down in his grandmother Nettie Mitchell's house on Fayette Ridge Road. In 1961 a Lewiston newspaper listed Phoebe's family as "Mrs. Percy (Phoebe) Walton of West Farmington".
He died at Fayette on 4 November 1965, aged sixty-three, and was buried with his parents and grandparents in Lakeview Cemetery at Oakland, under the Walton monument. Phoebe lived another forty-three years and her obituary, written in 2008, remembered his death as 1963; the state's death index has 1965.
