James Ivan Marrable
James Ivan Marrable was born in Arkansas on 11 March 1922. His parents were Chatwin Emmett Marrable and Jimmie Neal Murph of El Dorado, and he had one sister, Dorothy Carmen, born in 1928, who became Mrs. Platt. The Marrables had been in Union County since the 1840s, when his grandfather W. D. Marrable came over from Alabama as a boy of six.
He married Alta Marie Tucker, a girl from Strong, in the east of the county, who was nine months older than he was. Their daughter Jeannie Marie was born at El Dorado on 15 January 1944, and a son, Jimmy R., followed in about 1947.
In April 1950 the family lived in El Dorado. James was 28 and worked forty hours a week as a gas blender at an oil refinery. El Dorado had been an oil town since the Busey well came in at the edge of the city in January 1921, and refining was the work that held it together after the boom. On the line after his family the census taker wrote Jimmie Perdue, a widow of 83, who was almost certainly his aunt Jimmie Marrable Perdue.
By 1973 the family lived at 1109 Marrable Hill, on the road south of El Dorado that carries the family name. When his mother died that October, her obituary told mourners that "the family will be at the James I. Marrable residence, 1109 Marrable Hill". His widow's own obituary in 2008 asked for memorials to the Marrable Hill Baptist Church, at 1201 Marrable Hill.
James Ivan Marrable died on 29 May 1999, aged 77. He was buried in the Bethel Cemetery south of El Dorado, where his parents and his grandparents lie. His stone is shared with Marie: a gray granite marker with MARRABLE across the top, a heart carved "DADDY" on his side and another carved "MOTHER" on hers.
