Russell Lodric Little
Russell Lodric Little was born on 14 July 1899 at Hesperia, a village on the White River where Oceana and Newaygo counties meet in western Michigan. He was the fifth child of Ernest Fletcher Little, an Indiana-born farmer, and Clarissa Mae Herin, called Clara, whose parents had come up from Paulding County, Ohio. His brothers and sisters were Etoile Intha (1891-1957), who married Claude Bigelow, James Ernest (1892-1951), Averil Lucetta (1895-1974), who married a Craner, Gladys Ivy (1897-1966), who married a Ford, a baby brother born and lost in 1907, and Theora Ruth (1908-1980), who married a Hull.
Like many young men from the farm counties he went to Flint, where the automobile plants were hiring. On 26 December 1920 he and Bessie Mae Marshall, a Flint girl of fifteen, sat for a studio portrait: he seated in a dark suit with a patterned tie, she standing at his shoulder in a dark satin dress with a beaded neckline and a string of beads. The date is written under the photograph in ink, and it is the year the two were married. Their children were Betty Ruth (1921-1984), Ralph Lodric (1926-1991), Carl Thomas (1927-1967), Jack Lee (1929-1993), Edna Mae (1932-2016) and Robert Clayton (1935-1975). He also had a daughter born in April 1921 to Laura Amanda Burge, Violet LaRay (1921-2011), who was raised under the Gault name; her half-sister Freda Gault later married his son Jack.
The family lived at 250 East Hobson Avenue in Flint, in the same house as Bessie's parents, and belonged to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Russell died at Flint on 15 November 1960, aged sixty-one, and was buried in Gracelawn Cemetery there. Bessie followed him a little over three years later.
