Arnest Frank Aimes
Arnest Frank Aimes, Frank to the census takers and Arnest to his family, was born on 4 January 1878 at Russell, Kansas, the second son of Clement Francis Sheveric Aimes and Calista Hadlock. His father, a New York cavalryman of the Civil War, had come to Russell County in 1871 as a cattle driver and married Calista there in 1875; his mother's people, the Hadlocks, had come the same year from Wisconsin. His brother Henry was three years older, and his sisters Louise and Anna came after. His mother died in August 1900, after two years of illness, when he was 22.
On 18 August 1901 he married Mable Annett O'Brien at Dorrance, a railroad town east of Russell. She was twenty, the daughter of Samuel O'Brien and Martha Virginia Furr. Their children were Laverne Samuel, born 1903, Alice Issabelle, 1907, Dwight Leander, born at Russell on 25 January 1909, Ariel, about 1914, Virgil Lynn, 1918, and Duane, about 1924. He worked as a building contractor and the family followed the work: Lucas in Russell County in 1915, Saline County in 1925, and in 1930 Atchison on the Missouri River, where the census found him at 48 with Mabel and five of the children at home.
In 1932 he moved to Farmington, in the San Juan oil and gas country of north western New Mexico, and lived there over thirty years, at 615 West Animas and later at 306 South Behrend. He was a contractor until he retired, and active in the First Methodist Church. Mable died in December 1963 after 62 years of marriage. Arnest died at his home on the morning of Thursday 30 April 1964, aged 86, after a long illness. The Farmington paper listed his six children, L. S. Aimes and Mrs. Fred Golding of Farmington, Ariel Hamblin, Dwight Aimes of Mulvane, Kansas, Virgil Aimes of Albuquerque and Duane Aimes of Sacramento, his sisters Mrs. Louie Smith of San Anselmo, California and Mrs. Anna Clark of Monroe, Oregon, 18 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. The funeral was at the First Methodist Church on the Sunday at two, Cope Memorial Chapel directing, and he was buried beside Mable in Memory Gardens of Farmington under a stone shaped as an open book.
