David Wakefield Haight
David Wakefield Haight was born in 1841 in Pennsylvania, a son of Joel Albert Haight, a farmer born in New York, and Rebecca Ann Stewart. The census of 2 November 1850 found him at eight in his father's house in Union Township, Jefferson County, with his brother Wesley, his sister Phoebe and two younger brothers. His mother died in May 1859, when he was about eighteen.
He served in the Civil War as a private in the 57th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, in Companies K and E, the regiment that his wife's relation George Benjamin Haight also joined. The 57th fought with the Army of the Potomac from the Peninsula to Appomattox.
He married Julia Minerva Horton, called Judy, a Brookville girl four years younger, and they raised seven children at Clarington on the Clarion River: Rebecca Malissa, Harry Robert, Gilbert Haskel, Alice Catherine, Myrtle Ivy, Sarah and David Jackson. He died in 1906 and is buried in the Clarington Methodist Cemetery under a stone that reads DAVID HAIT, CIVIL WAR VT, Co. K. E 57 PVI, 1841-1906. The one photograph of him shows a man with a full dark beard and swept-back hair, in a suit and vest.
