d. 1684 · Hatfield Broad Oak, England
Died 1684
Father: John Warner
Mother: Mary Purchas
Children include Isaac, Mary

Andrew Warner came from Hatfield Broad Oak in Essex, a parish also called Hatfield Kings. Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration Begins, citing an article in The American Genealogist (TAG 26:152-53), makes him a son of John and Mary (Purchase) Warner. His father, a yeoman of the parish, made his will on 16 July 1614. It names six children, Thomas, John, Andrew, Edward, Elizabeth and Rose, and four grandchildren, Thomas Warner and Thomas, John and Elizabeth Sanford, the Sanfords being children of the daughter Rose. His mother's will, made thirteen years later, names nineteen grandchildren, among them "The two children of Andrew my sonne." Andrew was born by about 1599.

On 5 October 1624 he married at Thaxted, a few miles north. The parish register reads: "Andrew Warner of Hatfield Magna married Mary Humfrey daughter of Robert of Thaxted." Mary had been baptised at Thaxted on 13 February 1602/3, a daughter of Robert and Ann (Holland) Humfrey. Their first children were born in England.

He came to New England in 1633 and settled at Cambridge. On 4 November 1633 the town granted him an acre for a cowyard. On 5 January 1633/4 it sold him a parcel of "swamp ground by the Old Field," and on 2 February he was granted three acres of planting ground in the neck of land. He was admitted to the church and made a freeman on 14 May 1634, which gave him a vote in the colony. On 3 February 1634/5 he sat on the committee to prepare an inventory of the Cambridge lands, and in that inventory, on 4 June 1635, he held seven parcels, the first of them a house with about a rood for a backside. He was chosen a selectman on 23 November 1635. In February 1635/6 the town hired him to build fences. On 23 April 1636 he was licensed to haul alewives from the weir, the small fish that ran up the rivers each spring, and appointed to "see a cartway made to the weir."

That year he moved to Hartford, on the Connecticut River. He was a deacon of the Hartford church by February 1639/40. He moved to Farmington in 1648, back to Hartford in 1650, and in 1659 up the river to Hadley. He was a maltster, making the malt from which beer was brewed, and he appears in that trade in the account book of John Pynchon of Springfield.

Mary Humfrey died by 1657. By then he had married Esther (Wakeman) Selden, widow of Thomas Selden and sister of Samuel Wakeman. His children by Mary included John, born about 1625, who married Anna Norton at Hartford; Mary, born about 1626, who married John Steele and then William Hills; Andrew, born about 1628, who married Rebecca Fletcher at Milford; Robert, born about 1630; Isaac, born about 1644; and Daniel, who married Martha Boltwood. A daughter Ruth was younger.

In 1677 Ruth was presented at the Hadley court for wearing silk, which the law allowed only to women whose fathers or husbands were worth a stated sum. She was admonished, and her father paid the costs.

He signed his own will on 18 June 1681. It left ten shillings each to "my son Robert Werner," "my son John Werner," "my daughter Hills" and "my daughter Pratt"; "my son Isaack Werner the one-half of my allotment in Hoccanum"; five pounds to "Mary Taylor the wife of John Taylor"; and made "my dear wife Easter Werner and my loving son Dan[ie]ll Werner" his executors. He died at Hadley on 18 December 1684, "aged about [88?] years," the figure in the inventory being hard to read. The will was proved on 31 March 1685.

His inventory, taken on 22 December 1684, came to 356 pounds 11 shillings and 4 pence, of which 253 pounds was land: four acres in Hoccanum, two acres and a rood "at the burying yard," the house and homestead at 65 pounds, six acres in the great meadow "on the south side of the middle way," four acres in the swamp, four more in the meadow, four and a half acres in Hoccanum, "one piece of skirts there," and twelve acres "over the river." It included books worth ten shillings.
