Mary Warner
Mary Warner was the eldest daughter of Andrew Warner of Hatfield Broad Oak in Essex. She was born in England about 1626, before the family emigrated. Her mother was Andrew's first wife, Mary Humfrey, whom he married at Thaxted in 1624. When Andrew's mother made her will in 1627 she named "The two children of Andrew my sonne." They were probably John, born about 1625, and Mary.
Her father crossed to New England in 1633 and settled at Cambridge in Massachusetts. In 1636 the family moved to Hartford on the Connecticut River, where her father became a deacon.
At Hartford on 22 January 1645/6 she married John Steele Jr., a son of John Steele, one of the town's founders. The town clerk wrote it in his own spelling: "John Steel was maryed To Maryy Warner on the Twenty & Two of Jenru one Thousand Six hundred forty & five." Some records call her Mercy.
She bore six children, Benoni, Henry, Daniel, Mary, John and Samuel. The family moved to Farmington, and there her husband died in 1653. Samuel was then about a year old. She married second William Hills of Hartford. Her father moved up the river to Hadley in 1659 and died there in 1684.
