Nathaniel Goodwin
Nathaniel Goodwin was born about 1637, a son of Ozias Goodwin and Mary Woodward of Hartford. He was admitted a freeman of the colony in October 1662. A freeman could vote for the colony's officers and hold its offices.
He was a weaver. Hartford chose him one of its townsmen in 1669, 1678 and 1682. The townsmen were the small board elected each year to manage the town's business between town meetings.
He married Sarah Cowles, a daughter of John and Hannah Cowles of Hatfield, formerly of Farmington. Their children were Nathaniel, born in July 1665, Sarah, born in April 1668, and John, baptised on 19 May 1672. Sarah died on 8 May 1676, aged twenty nine. Her gravestone still stands in the Centre Church burying ground at Hartford, the oldest stone there bearing the name of Goodwin.
He married second Elizabeth Pratt, a daughter of Daniel Pratt. Their children were Samuel in 1682, Hannah in 1685, Ozias in 1689 and Elizabeth in 1691.
His sister Hannah married William Pitkin, and in his will of 1694 William Pitkin called Nathaniel his brother. Nathaniel made his own will on 21 August 1712. He died at Hartford on 8 January 1713/14.
