Dea. John Loomis
John Loomis was born in Essex in 1622, a son of Joseph Loomis, a woollen draper of Braintree, and Mary White. In April 1638, when he was about sixteen, the family sailed from London in the Susan and Ellen. They reached Boston on 17 July and went on to Windsor on the Connecticut River, where his father was granted land in 1640.
He was admitted to the Windsor church on 11 October 1640. Admission made him a full member of the congregation.
On 3 February 1648/9 he married Elizabeth Scott, a daughter of Thomas and Ann Scott of Hartford. She had come over from Ipswich with her parents in 1634, aged nine. Her father had been killed at Hartford in 1643, and her mother had since married Thomas Ford of Windsor. Their son Joseph was born at Windsor on 7 November 1651.
From 1652 to 1660 the family lived at Farmington, the newer town to the west. Then they came back to Windsor, and he became a deacon of the church there. Windsor sent him as its deputy to the General Court in 1666 and 1667, and again in every year from 1675 to 1687. The General Court was the colony's assembly, which made its laws, and each town sent deputies to sit in it.
His father's estate was divided by agreement in 1658, and John was one of the eight heirs who shared it. He and Elizabeth had thirteen children. His son John, born in 1649, married in 1696 Sarah (Boltwood) Warner, the widow of Isaac Warner of Hadley and Deerfield.
He made his will on 27 August 1688 and died on 1 September, aged sixty six. The will was exhibited in court on 4 December. His monument was still standing in the Windsor burying ground in 1909. Elizabeth died on 7 May 1696.
