Denzil Mansfield Crane
Denzil Mansfield Crane was born on 19 February 1848 in Danville, Caledonia County, Vermont. He was the third child of Charles Crane, a teacher and farmer who was a selectman of Danville through the Civil War, and Mary Fiske of Guildhall. He grew up on the farms his father built up east of Danville Green, and he became a teacher as well as a farmer, as his father had been.
On 1 January 1877 he married Nancie Snow, at Danville. She was twenty two and had been born on the family farm at Brandon. Their first child, Grace Mary, was born at Danville that October. The rest were born in Barnet, where Denzil farmed at McIndoe Falls, the village on the Connecticut River at the south end of the town.
They had ten children. Grace Mary was born in 1877. Freddie Henry was born on 2 December 1879 and lived seventeen days. Then came Emma Louisa in 1880, Denzil Roger in 1882, Royal Mansfield in 1885 and Edna Almeria on 8 August 1887. Nelson Herbert followed in 1889, John Alaric in 1892 and Julia Helen in 1894. The last, Marshall Snow, was born on 20 March 1898 and died on 11 April.
Three of his daughters married into the Scots families of Ryegate and Groton. Grace married William James Orr in 1902, Emma married Linwood F. Whitehill, and Edna married his younger brother, Charles Harvey Orr, in 1913. Royal and John Alaric farmed together in Barnet. Denzil served as a selectman of Barnet in 1909. By 1923 he lived at McIndoes in the house where Albert Mason had died in 1890.
Besides farming and teaching, Denzil worked as a carpenter. He served as a selectman of Barnet and as chairman of the board of trustees of McIndoes Academy, and held many other offices for the town and the village. His obituary said that "whatever he undertook received his careful consideration, and his good judgment was highly valued by his fellow-townsmen."
He fell ill in February 1933 and seemed to be recovering until a relapse put him back in bed. He died at his home in McIndoes on Sunday afternoon, 30 April 1933, aged 85. Eight children survived him, among them Mrs. Charles Orr of Charlemont, Massachusetts, and Mrs. William Orr of Leyden. The funeral was held at the McIndoes church on the Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Ellis Crossley, and Mrs. Violet White sang "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" and "Some Sweet Day Bye and Bye." Charles and Edna Orr came up from Charlemont with their family. He is buried in McIndoe Falls Cemetery. Nancie died the next year.
