Mary Fiske
Mary Fiske was born on 13 July 1820 at Guildhall, Essex County, Vermont, a town on the Connecticut River. She was the youngest child of Aaron Fiske and Abigail Chandler. Her father died on 10 September 1822, when she was two, and her sister Adeline died the same year, aged eighteen.
As a young woman Mary lived for some years at Lowell, Massachusetts, in the home of her brother William Fiske. There she joined a Baptist church.
On 10 July 1842 she married Charles Crane, a teacher and farmer of Danville, Vermont. That year she joined the Congregational church at Danville by letter from the Lowell church. Her sister Climena had married Charles's elder brother James Crane, and another sister, Marilla, had married William Hoyt. All three sisters raised families in Danville.
Mary and Charles had seven children: John Henry, Calista Jane, Denzil Mansfield, Edwin Elmore, Emma Louisa, Frank Austin and Nelson. Emma died in 1878, at twenty two.
Mary died at the homestead on the morning of Tuesday, 7 October 1902, after an illness of several months. She had turned 82 that July. Her husband, six children and seventeen grandchildren survived her, as did a sister aged 86 and a brother over 90, both living at Lowell. By then she had belonged to the Danville church longer than anyone living but one or two others.
Her obituary closed: "Never robust, her sphere of influence has been largely that of the home, where her consistent Christian life and example have been felt for good." It called her sixty year marriage "a relation faithfully sustained." She is buried in Danville Green Cemetery, on the same stone as her husband, as "Mary Fiske, wife of Charles Crane."
