Dorothy Bird was baptised at Towcester, in Northamptonshire, on 25 May 1588. Her parents were Robert Bird of Towcester and his wife Amy. She had a sister, Perris, who married George Tighte.

On 20 February 1610/11 a licence was issued at Peterborough for "Thomas Lord of Towcester" to marry "Dorothy, daughter of Robert Bird of Towcester". They married at Towcester on 23 February. She was twenty-two. Thomas had buried both his parents the autumn before and had inherited his father's land in the town.

They had eight children, all baptised at Towcester. Richard came first in January 1612, then Anna in 1614, Thomas in 1616 and William in 1618. Robert followed in 1620, John in 1624, Amy in 1626 and Dorothy in 1629. Her father died in July 1622 and named her in his will as "daughter Lord, wife of Thomas Lord of Towcester". Her mother died in April 1625, and the next daughter born was named Amy.

In April 1635, at forty-six, she sailed from London with her husband and seven of the children in the Elizabeth and Ann. Richard, the eldest, had gone ahead. After a year or more near Boston the family went with Thomas Hooker's company to the Connecticut River in 1636, and she was one of the first settlers of Hartford.

Her husband died about 1644. She lived on as Mrs. Dorothy Lord for another thirty years. Her daughter Dorothy died at Northampton in January 1657, aged twenty-seven. Her son Richard died at New London in 1662 and her son Thomas at Wethersfield the same year. She made her will on 8 February 1669/70 and left her great Bible to "my daughter Stanton", her daughter Anna, wife of Thomas Stanton. She died in the spring of 1675 at about eighty-six. The inventory of her estate was taken on 12 May 1675 and the will was proved two days later.
